Jensen Huang Says A100 GPUs Can Last Nearly a Decade

Huang said on X that Nvidia's A100 fleet is "mission-capable from 2020 through 2029," highlighting the longevity of the company's data center GPUs.

The A100 debuted in 2020 as part of Nvidia's Ampere generation.

"NVIDIA computing is more than chips," Huang said, pointing to the company's CUDA software platform as a key reason its hardware can remain useful across generations.

"CUDA makes NVIDIA computing versatile," he added. "Versatility makes it fungible. Fungibility drives utilization and extends durability."

His comments came after reposting a Business Insider report about the continued demand for the five-year-old A100.

The mighty A100 fleet are mission-capable from 2020 through 2029. NVIDIA computing is more than chips. CUDA gives developers and NVIDIA engineers a common platform to continually upgrade Ampere, Hopper and Blackwell throughout their useful lives.

CoreWeave's 2029 A100 Deal Challenges GPU Obsolescence Fears

Huang's comments followed a disclosure from AI cloud provider CoreWeave Inc. that it signed a contract to rent Nvidia A100 GPUs through 2029 at what CFO Nitin Agrawal described as an "attractive price."

That means the 2020-era chips could still generate revenue nearly nine years after launch, despite several newer Nvidia GPU generations entering the market.

The development challenges a key concern among AI infrastructure bears that accelerating chip improvements could cause older GPUs to lose their economic value within two or three years.

Why GPU Longevity Matters for Nvidia's AI Boom

Older GPUs can remain useful by shifting from the most demanding AI workloads to inference, smaller models and other applications that do not require the latest hardware, the BI report stated.
